Location

Sri Bodhirukkharamaya, Wellava, Polgahawela

Description

Sri Bodhirukkharamaya of Polgahawela was housing about 35 bhikkhus where 25 of them were young samaneras who are under 20 years. There were eight elderly bhikkhus who were well over 70 years old and were suffering from various illnesses. Most of these old bhikkhus were unable to move on their own and were in need of personal attention and care with most of their day to day activities. The most heartening part of their plight was they did not have a proper place to reside. All these ailing and disabled bhikkhus were living in a deteriorating old house with minimum ventilation. Sanitary facilities were at their worst with no proper lavatory. Dhammadeepa Foundation took the initiative of building a new residence (Avasa) for the elderly bhikkhus with all required facilities including a modern bathroom and set of lavatories which were equipped to cater the needs of disabled bhikkhus. The new building included separate rooms for all elderly bhikkhus, a mini library, lobby area and well equipped kitchen.
